Projects / Outputs

CIBE currently is working on a number of projects.  Here is a list, and where available, results of our work with each.

  • Ohio Survey of Trends in Information Demand
This research was commissioned by the Ohio State University Extension to support its ongoing Strategic Planning process.  Surveys were conducted for three clientele groups for Extension:  Farmers, Ohio Consumers, and Agricultural Consultants and Advisors.  Results are available online.
  • Center for Advanced Functional Food Research and Entrepreneurship (CAFFRE):  Functional foods are defined as products providing health benefits beyond their contribution to nutrient requirements and can significantly contribute to mitigating disease. Linking nutrition, health and disease prevention has produced enormous commercial opportunities targeted towards health promotion and enhancement as well as the prevention and treatment of specific diseases.

CIBE researchers have led the following research and service:

    • Evaluating consumer reaction to health information (labels and promotional material) on functional foods.
    • Continued tracking of the use of dietary guidelines, nutrient content claims, and (qualified) health claims on functional food labels and promotional material.
    • Assistance in preparing proposals for research and industry extramural support to sustain CAFFRE.

  • Center for Food Safety and Agrosecurity (CFSA):  The Center for Food Safety and Agrosecurity proposes to bring innovative advances in food safety to commercial applications. The current focus of this group is on the US Egg Safety Action Plan which calls for complete eradication of Salmonella from eggs by the year 2010. In addition, this group is looking at the development of tamper proof caps for food packages and rapid test diagnostics of food borne pathogens.  CIBE researchers have led the following research and service:
    • Support of food recall research, assessing industry and government response.
    • Evaluation of the role for tamper evident packaging. Building from consumer focus groups, a pending survey of manufacturer and academic audiences.
    • In collaboration with EggTech, completed an industry survey and journal article assessing the impact of the US Egg Safety Action Plan on R&D and adoption of innovative technologies such as ozone treatment.
    • Assistance in preparing proposals for extramural support sustaining CFSA.

  • The Ohio BioProducts Innovation Center (OBIC)
The Ohio Bioproducts Innovation Center is a new research initiative that integrates academia and industry toward the development of renewable specialty chemicals, polymers/plastics and advanced materials.    CIBE personnel have contributed in important ways to the success of OBIC:

    ·         The CIBE project manager is a member of OBIC's management team.

    ·         CIBE researchers are leading a marketing analysis of soybean and corn varieties that may be well suited for industrial applications.

    ·         CIBE has collaborated with OBIC researchers to receive an OARDC Industry Matching Grant ($100,000) to work with a private company in the development and market assessment of a bio-based plant growth medium.
